    FAQ:  what does phrf mean?

Performance Handicap Racing Fleet (PHRF) is a handicapping system used for yacht racing in North America. It allows dissimilar classes of sailboats to be raced against each other. The aim is to cancel out the inherent advantages and disadvantages of each class of boats, so that results reflect crew skill rather than equipment superiority. (Wikipedia)

History of the "Ma" Huus:   "The CC Knockabout Class donated the "Ma" Huus Trophy in 1965 to commemorate Augusta M. "Ma" Huus, whose service, spirit and devotion to the association was of unparalleled importance in leading the organization to it's present high esteem and whose particular interest in the CC Knockabout Class helped in sustaining that class so that it had existed as an active racing class longer than any other in the Wet Pants Sailing Association.  It is now awarded to the Wet Pants Member who has the best record in a three race Sunfish Series.  Ma Huus was Financial Secretary and also served on the Race Committee when not crewing for her husband.  She was also the recipient of the Sacred Pants in 1959."

    PARENTS' RACE Reminder

The first race is scheduled to begin at 10:00 A.M. - we'll have a few short races and get you back to your family in short order!

PLEASE NOTE - DUE TO COVID-19 - REGISTER FOR FREE VIA THE EVENTS CALENDAR TAB ON WETPANTSSAILING.ORG

This is the Edward Lyon Memorial Trophy Race, otherwise known as the Parents' Race.

Edward Lyon learned to sail soon after his children took their first Wet Pants sailing lessons. He came to typify the many devoted Wet Pants parents who spent long hours building, refinishing, and repairing their children's boats - all wooden in those days! Once a season these parents had a chance to sail their children's boats in this special race.

WPSA Member Parents, your chance to race for the Edward Lyon Memorial Trophy is this coming Saturday. You can race anything with a sail on it. It's kind of a fun thing, and it's rumored that in the past there may have been some friendly wagers made.  The only requirement is that you have to be a WPSA parent.

Watch Hill Sail Over & Fire Island Camp Out - Aug 18st - 20th
An Invite to all Members of Wet Pants Sailing Association,

in August we will once again have the WPSA group campsite at Watch Hill, on Fire Island. There are many ways you and your family can participate this year at Watch Hill!  Last year was cancelled due to Hurricane Henri, so this year will be better than ever!

    1) Sail & stay over with us:  Sail over on your own big boat that you can sleep on and spend the weekend boat camping.  You are responsible for the reservation and paying the dock fees at the marina.
    2)  Sail & spend a day with us:  Sail over on any boat that can be docked and spend the day with us at the Ocean. You are responsible for paying the dock fees for the day.  Unfortunately, there is no place that I know of to anchor and wade in at Watch Hill.
    3) Spend a day with us:  Come over for the day on the Watch Hill Ferry and see us at the beach and pack a picnic!
4.)  Sail and campout with us:  If you are willing to brave the elements, come join my family and tent camp for the weekend.  Each family would need to bring their own gear, food etc. If you are planning to stay in one of the most beautiful locations in the world for the weekend.

If you are planning to stay, it is a wonderful and a ton of work - but sleeping with the sound of the ocean is priceless. Last year, my kids did a Park Ranger tour on Friday night and a Park Ranger Scavenger hunt to become a Junior Ranger on Saturday. I do not know if they will do that this year but we can only hope. With full disclosure, they do not spray for mosquitoes at all since it is a Federal Park, bring lots of bug spray and pray for a light breeze all weekend.

As with every thing, we will need to follow the appropriate COVID-19 procedures in place at the time, on the ferry, dock, etc. Since COVID-19 is around, we will not supply any food, however we can provide you with a hot grill for dinner and you bring your own food to cook.

Please let me know if you have any questions.  Many years ago we had a large group and had a blast. Last year we started it back up and had fun. I hope to see many people, even if its just for the day, come together (socially far apart) and fellowship at the beach.

Please contact me with any questions!
